Best Exercise Equipment for Weight Loss

time2012/01/01

All exercise equipment can help you achieve your weight loss goals if used properly and with the right intentions. Choose equipments that train your entire body, build strength and endurance, and can last a long time with little or no maintenance. Most of such equipment are commonly found in gyms and are inexpensive to own at home.

Kettlebells

A kettlebell resembles a cannon ball with a luggage handle attached to it. It was commonly used by strongmen, bodybuilders and athletes in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and they are regaining in popularity since the early 2000s. Because of their uneven weight distribution, kettlebell exercises require you to use your entire body to stabilize, balance and generate power. Unlike dumbbells, kettlebells are difficult to train your muscles in isolation.

Stability Ball

Stability ball (or Swiss ball) exercises require your body to maintain balance at all times and offer additional stabilization strength to your core muscles (trunk, hips and spine). When you substitute a workout bench with a stability ball, you will burn more calories because your body is doing more work to support itself. Stability balls are common in gyms and are affordable.

Medicine Ball

Most medicine balls are made up of heavy rubber and are filled with air. They are used primarily for power training, which involves fast, explosive movements. Some athletes often use them for quick hand-eye coordination and reflex training by throwing and catching a medicine ball against a wall or with a training partner. These power and speed exercises elevate metabolism quickly and burn many calories in a short amount of time.

Clubbells

Clubbells are relatively new to the modern fitness industry, but they have been used by athletes in India, Europe and Russia for over 200 years. They resemble bowling or juggling pins and, like kettlebells, clubbell exercises require you to use your entire body to work. They can be used with one or two hands, depending on the weight of the club and your strength.

Cable Column

Cable column machines allow you to perform a variety of traditional strength exercises in sitting, standing or supine positions. They allow you to perform different exercises (push, pull, chop, rotate) at one station instead of hopping from machine to machine. The height adjustment customizes exercises to your height and offers different challenges at different height levels. These machines can be costly compared to other equipment and require higher maintenance.
